J.W. Kelso Company, Inc. was founded in 1979 by John Kelso and J. H. Wedemeyer to continue a long family tradition of involvement in the construction industry in Galveston County. The Kelso family has been involved in major construction projects in Galveston County since the turn of the century including the Galveston Causeway, portions of the Galveston Seawall, Moody Civic Center, and First Hutchings Sealy Bank (presently Bank of America) Building.
Since 1979, the company has grown to be one of the largest construction concerns in Galveston County and has completed numerous projects including the Texas Cruise Terminal (a renovation of a project originally constructed by John Kelso’s grandfather in 1927), Renovation of Open Gates Conference Center, San Luis Convention Center, and additions to Mary Moody Northern Church (a project originally constructed by John Kelso’s father in 1969). The company owns a significant amount of construction equipment and self performs a large percentage of its work including pile driving, demolition, earthwork, concrete and carpentry work.
